Mata Amritanandamayi
Mata Amritanandamayi, widely known as Amma, is an Indian spiritual leader and humanitarian whose life is devoted to unconditional love and compassionate service. Born in 1953 in Kerala, India, she showed extraordinary empathy from a young age, often comforting people in her community with a natural ability to soothe pain through touch and presence.
Amma became known worldwide as “the hugging saint” because her form of darshan—traditionally a moment of blessing—is offered through a deep, healing embrace. For Amma, the hug is not symbolic; it is her spiritual practice. Each person receives a fully present, individualized embrace, where Amma remains with them—sometimes for several seconds, sometimes for minutes—absorbing their pain, listening without words, and transmitting comfort, dignity, and unconditional acceptance.
Throughout her life, Amma has personally hugged over 40 million people. Many describe the experience as transformative: a release of emotional weight, a sense of being seen for the first time, or a feeling of returning home. Amma believes that true healing begins when a person feels held—physically and spiritually—and her embrace has become a universal language that transcends culture, religion, and background.
Her humanitarian network, Embracing the World, extends the spirit of this hug into global action: hospitals, disaster relief, housing for the homeless, environmental programs, orphan care, education, and large-scale initiatives for women’s empowerment. Amma travels worldwide offering talks, spiritual guidance, and, always, her signature embrace—one person at a time—sharing a message of compassion, unity, and love in action.
